From a message I received through Pastor Dave:

God's promise for today is found in James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously without finding fault, and it will be given to him."

God's promise "Ask Me for wisdom and I will generously give it to you."

God loves it when we ask Him for things we need. In Matthew 7:7 - 11 Jesus encourages us to keep on asking, keep on seeking and keep on knocking and our heavenly Father will give us what we need. In today's promise, we read than ask God for wisdom and He is glad to give it to us.

We need wisdom to navigate through life. So what wisdom do you need today that you do not yet have? Simply ask God your heavenly Father fro the wisdom you need and He will generously give it to you with out finding fault in your asking.

God is a good Father who gives good gifts to His children. James 1:17 says " Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like the shifting shadows."

What decisions do you need to make today? What area of your life do you need God's wisdom today? Just ask!

While you enjoy the beautiful day, meet and greet the local small businesses who are free to attend! This community outreach through Project Small Business is our own brand of local stimulus.

The event will begin with a 1K Walk to Benefit the American Red Cross. The Big Red Buses will be there for blood donations and giveaways. Sea Coast National Bank has graciously sponsored the event and will have a central booth. Biz Fest is Presented by MyVenueNow.com, whom will showcase the local small business and provide plenty of free giveaways! Mayor Faiella will make a presentation and IRSC will have speakers.

My response:

I would have to wonder about the bipolar aspect too. We all need to remember the term co-morbidity. Thats the term I remember being told by a highschool friend of mine, who i grew up knowing she was a little different but I liked her and we hung out in similar circles. When I saw her at my sons elementary school, she was sub-ing for one of the teachers that were out on maternity leave. I was waiting to see the principal about issues that he needed to address with my sons teacher; whom had managed my son inappropriately. This friend of mine explained how her parents went through medicating her and taking her to drs and to always remember that the label "they" give your child, doesnt explain it all. Another friend of mine explained that this type of child was just born into the wrong century :) Sometimes you need to remember to step into your child's world. Try to realize and imagine the coping skills they are developing while growing up in this crazy world. Reinforce the good. Down play the bad. And hugs and kisses! Create your own therapy! We can provide our children with painting and music, massage and meditation, excitement and site seeing. Encourage yourself and your child to enjoy their childhood. Send them off into the world in confidence and purpose.

A reason I am grateful to my parents for raising my in the church, is knowing the word kept hidden in my heart. I consider myself a sort of seeker. Seeker of knowledge and truth.

Rather than rant on I would prefer the anointed Word of God speak for itself. I do not necessarily need some one to interpret for me, but pray for understanding.

Lost and Found

Do you ever ask yourself, "How did I end up here?"
When in the throws of raising a family, there are times when you most certainly feel thrown off course.
My cure for those moments are Family Fun Nights! or days, which ever happens first.

I think back to when I was a child... we had plenty of time at church, but not so much one on one time. Maybe my memory doesn't serve me well... No real time at sporting events or developing hobbies. For us it was vacation bible school and play dates with the neighbors. Such fond memories... why haven't I found those childhood friends on Facebook yet???

Everyone has those fleeting moments when they wish things were different, perhaps wondering what if you had made a different choice? Well, nothing can undo who our parents are or the path we've traveled. Nothing can change who we are now parenting and mentoring. That is where it's vital to stop wondering around lost and rather realize we have found our place and purpose, directing the family we have and guiding our children's lives.

I give kudos to my parents, they did the best that they could... well my mom did no doubt. My father...well, I'll explore that avenue on a different day. He meant well and certainly I can remember times feeding the ducks and going on long walks with him. There just came a point when I struck teenage years and I wasn't such a good girl in his eyes anymore... who me? can you believe it?!

As good or bad as I've been, here I am a mother of 2 and still not close to perfection. But I strive to give my children everything I could dream for them. That doesn't mean that I can afford to have them living in the lap of luxury, but that does mean that the moments we spend together will add up to time well spent.

Those of you who know me understand that raising my family hasn't been an easy venture. I imagine there's no such thing as easy where family is concerned. I can see how a mother can become detached and go on autopilot, just making sure everyone is taken care of.

Part of my journey in finding myself has been to realize that I have more to me than just the scope of motherhood. But that is besides the point! All week I have been cleaning up crusty eyes and runny noses. Woken up to late night fevers and giving cool showers. Listening to stories about Pokemon characters and Playstation strategy. This week has definitely been low key, which is a drastic difference from last weeks running around and days in the pool. I will embrace every beautiful moment as they come my way, snuggling my boys and getting way too wet kisses from them, yuck!

What is going on in the world? And what in the world is going on with me? I have not a care about all the impending doom around me. Somehow, I am staying focused on what needs to be done to take good care of my kids and strengthen the relationship with their father, my fiancé.

This weekend, my boys and I went on a camp-away trip. Even though when asked if they could bring it and I said NO, it still managed to sneak onto the trip with us. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "Can I have the Gameboy back mommy?" So what's a mom to do? You tell your children no, and they whine. Explain that we're out enjoying nature; try shushing and teach them that we're supposed to enjoy the peace and quiet... and then a scared-y cat scream announces the presence of a bug!

If this trip has taught me anything, it's that we are far too plugged in. The funny thing is, the Gameboy has been out of sight for months! Only just this past week did it reappear and just that fast, they were hooked right back on it.

I've often wondered, how sensitive is the young mind? How do addictive adults become that way? We get hooked on little things from young, early on in life. For me, it was my baby dolls (I have my kids now), singing along to smooth vocals, writing in my journals, painting and drawing. I still enjoy these artsy activities; yet my children find it torturous to sit down for any of it, or stand for that matter. So, my goal for this summer is to immerse the boys in hands on activities and make technology free zones and time frames. And fun, can't forget fun ;)

They're really gonna love me now ;)

What if, just maybe, they have a good time and enjoy themselves? And what if, just maybe, I fall more in love with the two little men who mean more to me than anything in this entire universe to infinity?! This summer is going to be spectacular! My oldest will be turning nine and the younger will be five. My nearly five year old talks about being ten and reaching the petal to drive his car that I have to buy him. He is so full of knowledge and information, he teaches us all about the world as he discovers it, allowing you to discover it along with him. This weekend was all about snake fish. My oldest, well, he's going through a rough time. Not that he's actively aware of it, just something I know and guide him through. But, this child is bright eyed and full of wonder! Totally out of character, he's actually the more quiet one letting his little brother take center stage. So for him, it will be the summer of making memories that will last a life time!

We'll find a way to turn their love of electronics into a love for arts and crafts.

Do I need to teach you?

Boys will be boys and mine certainly live up to this phrase!

I've gone through all the motions and they're getting old.

Recently, when my boys aren't making the best choices, I've been asking them do I need to teach you how...?

For instance, a neighborhood kid came to complain against my 8 yr old and I asked my son, Do I need to teach you how to speak kindly? He thought for a moment and said, no mom, I know how.

Its nice finding a way to avoid an argument and let the children work things out on their own.

It has been at least ten years since I have learned a valuable lesson from my wise Aunt. I could not have been more than twenty years old. Lets just say my life was a bit of a whirlwind and I didn't know which direction I should go.
I was visiting my dad at his cozy efficiency apartment.
My father happened to call his youngest sister long distance and after a brief catching up, put me on the phone with the Aunt I'd never met. She and I had only seen pictures of one another and they were few. We've spoken on a number of occasions, enough to know that we both had been through ups and downs and still both able to hold onto hope and love of God.
"You're beautiful," my Aunt lovingly said.
"Nah, you should see me today," I laughed at her comment, repelling it.
"But you are a precious child of God and you are so beautiful," my Aunt reassured me.
I looked down at my grundgy tshirt, flannel overshirt and baggy jeans, touched at my long multi-colored hair.
"You know you should learn how to take a compliment. Just say Thank You."
This loving instruction, so simple and to the point, has been the single largest self esteem building tool I have in my utility belt.
Just being able to say thank you when complimented is a jewel I have passed along to all who have tried to repel my compliments towards them.

December Is Closing

Nearly a month has past since she last wrote.
So much to tell, but she will keep it to herself.
This month has had so many highs and lows...
The recurring theme:
Ask and ye shall receive.
Her cup now runneth over and its all she can do to enjoy what she has and to stop running from her fears.
Fears that are all too often shadows of a past long ago; fears that are perhaps not even her own.

So, she will not stand in the way of her own light;
and if anyone likens to shine with her they need not worry about making mistakes,
those just fall to the way side.
Negativity will no longer gravitate nor draw her in.

Her mind will not be manipulated and conned nor deceived.
If she is a fool, it is for but a brief pulse in time.
Esta chica aqui es muy inteligente!
She will always reground, finding a way home to the self that reassures and hushes the fears away;
the fears of a little girl who's lost her way and not sure where to find her dreams.
What to do with the feeling of being unfulfilled?
No matter where she turns or who she encounters the answer will never be found until she looks within;
the strength is there.

So, hush little baby...
I am a woman, proud of myself, but never too proud; I'll keep learning.
As I do (and I quote):
"I'm me...take it or leave it, but trust when I say, it'll be your loss, not mine."

Real Life vs. Dreams

So there are spies in the President's presence and Tiger Woods is having an affair! Hot topics huh? Did you realize that we are a World at War? A little too much to swallow. How do we go about these days and times still finding a way to enrich and enjoy ourselves. If you had a few extra dollars and the means to get away, where would it be?
I'd plan my dream wedding and be a princess for a day...treated like a queen for the rest of our lives.
Maybe you'd come along with me to travel the farthest reaches of this world and this galaxy.
I'm learning to be patient with myself. What a concept! An ah ha moment, for sure. I'm learning all the time too, and for now I'm going to cuddle my baby back to sleep.

Satin and Lace

There she is, that girl in the back, there... past the crowd to the far dark corner. There shone the light of glittering pink against lacey black. Her reactions irrational and overwhelming. Her blond teased-so-high hair glowing around her.

Strip away the past, it poisons the future. Burn it away, refiner's fire. All emotional regret, never again to fret. Stronger than before and weakened because more exposed. What are all the secrets for?

Get it all out, sort it good from bad. The pieces lay where they fall, ready to be picked up again.

And so it goes....

This life is a beautiful one, FEAR can over take and rip your heart to shreds.

See how the cool winds blow wisps of angel hair against rosy skin.

Judgment placed by whispers in the distance, what do you see now? Has it all just stayed the same?

Why is it that when you see her you fear her? You just don't understand her. This shadow girl in pink and black, here to stay.

What if there was really nothing wrong? Nothing to fix? Everything's just fine.
How many times to be made a fool enabling those around to justify the way they mistreat and hurt and repeat the history that she was told to be her fate. What if this fate can be rewritten? Her way to heaven's gate?
Surely, she can be the one to hold the key and forge a path, healing will come.

Healing in our love and understanding, our ability to come undone. Gently. Stronger now.

She finds solutions to her problems, perhaps not always the most appropriate.
How better it would be to handle the balancing act by sharing with those who care enough to lend an ear and a hand.

In her desperation, she found that love hadn't run nor slipped elusively away. They both needed time to heal and the strength is a bond nothing can shake.

Standing firmly, grounded in determination and faith, not living by fear and guilt. Living in love and thoughtful compassion, she waits and pursues her dreams. Making them come true one by one.

Raising a family is no simple matter. It takes a commitment like no other, Patience like a saint, Love that is forgiving. Always appreciate that nothing is as it seems.

She's not going anywhere. Love is here to stay.

I will start the month of November with a study of the book of Psalms. I will be using the Holy Bible, King James Version, Jimmy Swaggart Reference Edition. This particular Bible was presented to my Mother from my Father many years ago and has been passed along to me.

The Book of Psalms

"Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scournful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish."

The book of Psalms is always my favorite place to start when it comes to my devotional reading. From the time of my childhood, I have been raised to know and sing praises to God. Verse 3 brings back memories of a song we'd sing in children's church, praise and worship and vacation bible school. My goal in sharing the scriptures with you is to embark on a deeper knowledge of God's word together.

Snatched after school and murdered, her body left lifeless in a garbage dump. Today, strangers felt compelled to stand up for the little girl and family in remembrance of her sweet, innocent and short life. The Memorial Service that came too soon is somewhere I am also, in heart.

How precious are our babies? Our children are blessings, full of hope and innocent wonder. It can be easy to get lost in the woes of the adult world.

As parents or just someone who cares about the children in your life, be cautious and keep the children well supervised. Obviously, if you're not watching them, some one else is. Talk to your kids about bodily fluids and stranger danger no matter how old they are. Danger lerks in many shapes and forms.

We should rethink our comfort zones. Take time to implement new rules and consequences. Children thrive with structure. Role play and communicate with our children. Really talk to them about sensitive issues so they are prepared with how best to handle the situation when you're not around to turn to.

And of course, hug them and kiss them and tell them they're good, the best, everything we ever wanted in a child. Remind them and ourselves we were also once children. Enjoy your time together and have lots of family fun nights.

My children tell me things that blow me away, they have such deep thoughts. I will cherish them always.

With all the publicity surrounding swine flu, it is easy to become overwhelmed with conflicting advice. There's no need to panic; so far, the swine flu doesn't seem to be any more devastating than the seasonal flu. Seasonal flu is estimated to hospitalize 200,000 and kill 36,000 people in the US every year.[1] The key to keeping the swine flu relatively benign is to take precautions. If your child becomes ill, you can follow these common-sense steps to manage the illness and prevent further spread.

Steps

Decide whether to keep the child home. It's ultimately up to you to make the judgment call as to whether your child has the common cold or the flu. Some people think that the difference between a cold and the flu is a fever, but many people who contracted the 2009 H1N1 flu (hereafter referred to by its more popular name, the swine flu) never had a fever. Ideally, you should keep your child home if there is any sneezing, coughing, sore throat, or any of the other symptoms of a common cold. (My Edit)~*Weigh out whether or not to take your child to a doctor, because most physicians aren't testing for swine flu. However, be sure to watch for signs of Infection and Distress. This is the time of year when respiratory, sinus and eye infections become all too common. If your child has a history of bronchial or asthmatic conditions, be sure to have your child on controller medication. The worst feeling is that of a child who can barely breathe. If you do not have health insurance and access to a doctor, or the local urgent care clinic is far too expensive, an alternative is to visit the local health food or nutrition store and seek a natural alternative to bring the health back to your child and family.~*[2][3]
- The only way you can be reasonably sure your child doesn't have the swine flu is if he or she got the complete swine flu vaccine, and their immune system has had a chance to protect itself. Children are protected from swine flu starting 10 days after their last required dose. Children over 10 only need one dose, but children under 10 need two, 21 days apart.[4] So if it hasn't been 10 days after your child's last required dose, he or she might still have contracted the swine flu.
Isolate your child until the symptoms subside. The most important thing is to make sure your child doesn't spread the virus. Practice good hygiene, and teach the child to do the same, if they are old enough. Whether the child has the common cold, the seasonal flu, or the swine flu, it's best to keep the virus contained. Even if the child doesn't have the swine flu, his or her immune system will be kept busy by the cold or seasonal flu virus, making them more susceptible to the swine flu. That's why it's important to limit your child's contact with people (including you and others in the household)--both for their protection, and that of everyone else.
- If you're especially vulnerable to swine flu, like if you're pregnant or have a compromised immune system, you should see if you can get someone else to take care of the child. Likewise, it's especially important to keep the sick child as isolated as possible from young adults and other children (who seem to be particularly vulnerable to swine flu[5]) in the household, or anyone else who is considered especially vulnerable. Even if you get vaccinated immediately, there are still about 10 days before the vaccine kicks in.
Nurse the child to health. The following tips will help your child recover faster:
- Give fluids to make sure your child is properly hydrated. These can include tea, broth, diluted fruit juice, or water. Make sure there is nutritional value in some of the liquids
- Chicken soup is traditionally considered helpful. For the full benefit, use chicken stock, not "chicken flavor soup".
- Allow your child to rest. Make him or her comfortable, and keep the room quiet enough to allow naps. If your child is awake, offer some calm activities he or she can do in bed, such as coloring or reading.
- Monitor your child's temperature with a home thermometer. Young children have difficulties regulating body temperature, and may require intervention if the fever runs too high. If this happens, give mild fever reducers designed for children. This will help reduce fever and inflammation, and make your child more comfortable. Remember; do not give a child under the age of 19 aspirin or salicylate containing products as this may trigger Reye's Syndrome. Get your child immediate medical attention if he or she exhibits any of the following:[2]
- fast breathing or trouble breathing
- bluish or gray skin color
- not drinking enough fluids
- severe or persistent vomiting
- not waking up or interacting
- so irritable that he does not want to be held
- flulike symptoms that improve but then return with fever and a worse cough
Get yourself immediate medical attention if you (or any of the adults in the house) exhibit any of the following:[2]
- difficulty breathing or chest pain
- purple or blue discoloration of the lips
- vomiting and inability to keep liquids down
- signs of dehydration, such as feeling dizzy when standing or being unable to urinate
Decide whether to get the child vaccinated. If the child hasn't gotten vaccinated against either kind of flu yet, you'll have to decide whether to do so once he or she has recovered. If you're confident the child had the swine flu, it'll be unnecessary to get them vaccinated because their immune system will already have developed its defenses against the virus. - You should get vaccinated, too, if you didn't get sick. If you missed work to take care of the child, and you lucked out and didn't catch a virus, then the last thing you want to do is catch one from someone else and end up having to stay home again.

Tips

The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to those of seasonal flu. The danger in swine flu is in how quickly it can spread, and that it's more likely than the seasonal flu to affect children, adolescents, and young adults[6] who are more likely to gather in large groups (i.e. school).[1]

But the fact that so many women are abused, mostly by men they know, is still something that most people don’t want to think about – and which legislation and policy are only slowly addressing. The mommies are talking and its all about nutrition. My favorite side dish is broccoli and cauliflower or salad.The more green veggies the better! They will flush out the fats and cholesterol.

Pressure Cooker Boneless Beef Short Ribs

A pressure cooker is my favorite toy these days.

This quick slow cooked meal was ready in about two hours. The succulent boneless beef short ribs were gobbled up so fast, I didn't even have time to think of getting out the camera!

I love making soul food. I take my own style of seasonings and timing and make the meal with love. You may change anything here to suit your own taste.

I used a non stick skillet to heat enough canola oil to coat the pan, over medium heat.

Next, season about 3 lbs. of boneless beef short ribs with salt and black pepper. I had to brown them in batches. Spoon flour onto a plate and season it with a bit of salt and pepper. Coat each rib liberally with the seasoned flour and gently place it into the hot skillet. It will sizzle and caramelize with a delicious brown crust. Do not disturb while it browns for about 3-4 minutes each side. If you'd like it to brown further, keep a close eye on it and rotate evenly.

While the short ribs brown, fill the pressure cooker a little less than half way with water and place over medium heat.

To this, add your diced or pureed veggies such as garlic, onions, green peppers, scallions, cilantro. This combination is a base for a green colored sofrito that can be used to season all kinds of meat and poultry dishes.

Add your dry spices and powders such as culantro, paprika, annato, garlic powder, onion powder, crushed red pepper flakes, a light sprinkle of cayenne pepper, iodized salt and black pepper. (I am a believer in Iodized salt as it supports good mental health. I also season with which ever I have on hand.)

Add to the pot a dash of seasoned salt, a few dabs of spicy brown mustard, a spoon or two of beef base or bullion, a splash of red wine vinegar and a few forks of banana peppers. The point is to infuse the short ribs with a punch of flavor accented by the tenderness of the pressure cooked melt in your mouth meat. Whatever your personal style and flavor, experiment a bit considering complimentary flavors.

Add the short ribs to the pot. It should cover them completely without far passing the half way mark, give or take. To prevent any foaming add oil and a dash of salt.

Dot not be afraid to close the pressure cooker while the dish has already started cooking. There needs to be an accumulation of pressure before it will be dangerous.

Continue cooking over medium to medium high heat. As you hear the pressure cooker start to blow it's magic whistle, listen to it while you gauge how much to lower the heat. Once you start to hear it sing, maintain over a medium flame for at least 30 minutes before lowering it some more while allowing it to simmer under pressure.

For about another 30 minutes, continue over a medium low flame. There is no need to stir or handle the pressure cooker what so ever. Depending on how tender you'd like your short ribs, you can turn the flame to low for another 20 or so minutes OR continue to pressurize over medium low heat for another 30 minutes.

Once you've done a low cook, shut the heat off completely. It will still continue to cook. After about 5 minutes, I prop a utensil against the spout and stand clear while the pressure releases. I do not recommend cooling the pot off in the sink with running water. It is too risky to move the hot pressurized pot and the temperature may cool too much, making it take on an undesirable flavor and consistency.

Once all the pressure has been released, you are free to open the pot. The broth should be rich, yet may still be thin. To thicken you can add a flour water mixture. A few spoons of flour with water incorporated to a smooth consistency. If you'd like a stroganoff flavor, you can sparingly thin sour cream with milk or cream and incorporate to the broth.

The boneless short ribs are perfect served with crusty bread for dipping in the broth, a sort of au jus. Pastas, potatoes or rice go great accompanied as well. Fresh veggies or fruit along side will brighten the palette.

The ribs are not greasy or fatty and are fork tender. Infusion of all the flavors make each bite a treat!

Make sure to properly store left overs and rinse your pot thoroughly, allowing it to soak for a few minutes making it easier to clean. Try not to scratch with abrasives. Clean the lid well and if your pieces detach, clean each part with care. Drip dry and coat the plastic ring with a bit of cooking oil to store.

A Commentary on President Barack Obama's Health Care Reform Speech*~

To whom it may concern,

A hug and shake for every man. A cheek and kiss for every woman. This is how President Barack Obama entered the auditorium on the evening of Wednesday 9/9/09. Weeks later, our country has barely inched towards an agreement on Health Care reform. There is no definitive way to make everyone happy, is there? It would seem an impossible task. Getting lost in all the technical jargon, is the Humanity; medical care for human kind. Seems pretty simple, but of course it's entirely complicated. There are bills to be paid, incomes to inflate, training and waste and bureaucracy. Where is the accountability? An oath is simply not enough. Health care is another industry over run with corruption; you can't even trust the medication you take won't make you die or at least suicidal.

The President opened his speech by introducing John Dingell Jr., whom has followed his father's lead of proposing country wide health insurance before every Congress since 1933. What is it about health insurance that has taken us nearly a century to this point and yet we still fail to provide coverage for every American? Isn't it a moral and ethical right for the country that is the most charitable to take care of the health of it's own people? Perhaps there are too many questions and not enough answers.

President Obama spoke of people who met death only because their insurance providers put up so much red tape that the delay of appropriate care was fatal. Therefore, this is not an issue of simply insuring the uninsured. Rather, the health care industry as a whole is a system riddled with greed, certainly lacking moral and ethic. How do we replace these values in a society that has long removed God from the decision making equation? There is even talk of a Death Panel, most recently being alleged by former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin. Do a little Google-ing and you are swamped in commentary on the subject. The most shocking thing is, the claim is essentially true. The health insurance industry acts in such a way as to override a doctor's recommendation of care in name of the bottom line and profit, at the cost of human life. How shall we do away with the notion of survival of the fittest? It even seems that we will never see cures to AIDS, Cancer, Asthma, Diabetes, etc. It disgusts me to ponder the prospect of never seeing an end of these and countless other terrible diseases as long as the almighty dollar trumps the use of a crucial or hidden resources.

So my question, to every representative of The People, would be "For Whom do You stand for?

The insurance cronies who make campaign contributions?

The pharmaceuticals who clearly spend millions a year on television advertising (where does that money come from?)

That leads me to think drugs would be a whole lot less expensive if it were illegal for drug companies to rage advertising campaigns when the decision of medication should be one offered by the doctor after thorough blood and other routine screenings direct the doctor to prescribe the medication to his or her patient based on specific guidelines.

Perhaps our Representatives stand for the business owner who can't afford to contribute to the employees health care or is too greedy to offer.

Then there is the employee his or herself, maybe a single parent who doesn't qualify for medicaid since her $0.50 per hour raise has disqualified her children from medicaid and she now has to foot $500 per month in premiums for her employer provided health plan. That raise of $1,040 per year has just cost her $6000 per year in premiums. Not to mention the other out of pocket expenses such as co-payments, deductibles, testing that the insurance won't cover, medication co-payments or medications that aren't covered either. The list goes on.

How is it that the poverty line has gobbled up the lower and middle classes ability to pay for health care, yet there are big shots making record bonuses and profits within the industry?

Or perhaps Mr. or Mrs. Representative, you might stand for the person without any job or access to health insurance. These are the very least of us who should be required to be covered. Consider it a charitable contribution and make it mandatory for the industry to pick these people up, do not however penalize the person for not going out and getting covered.

Tell me for whom do you stand? If you do not stand for the very least to the very greatest of us then you do not stand For The People and are there by corrupt and should be removed.

Now my question for the people is "What will you do to hold our Representatives accountable?"

I have written this blog and a copy will be mailed to each of my local Representatives I have a stamp to send it too. I even give permission for you to simply print this out and mail it off yourself. If you the reader need help figuring out to whom and where to mail this off to, just leave me a comment and I will do the research for you.

I call for transparency and accountability in the health insurance industry.

I call for ethical and moral standards within the industry.

I call for plans and implementation to cures for AIDS, Cancer, Asthma, Diabetes and an end to other terrible diseases.

I call for reviews that document and examine what luxuries can be done without, necessities that must be available, waste, bonuses and premiums.

There must be caps on premiums and fee increases in conjunction with implementation of patient income directed sliding scales.

There must be speedy dates set that a sick patient will receive appropriate care otherwise the industry will be penalized. There must not be avoidable deaths!

We can continue this list here all night, please try to come up with your own and spread the word that you stand for health care rights!

Back to school shopping went well today. Weeding through the racks went fast. Making it through the isles of clothes was like playing bumper carts!

Constantly keeping watch, purposefully searching; I made it out alive and with a couple of things for me too!

So, there's no tax free back to school holiday this year. From what I read, it wasn't even brought up for a vote. Thanks Flori-duh! Wow, they love to stick it to us here? So here's what I propose:

Grab the local ads and go shopping. Haggle with the cashiers and supervisors, managers if you have to, to give you a price match. Play lets make a deal. Make sure to say,

"There's no Back To School Tax Free Holiday, isn't there something you can do to help me out?"

Remember, you get more with honey than with vinegar, so be kind. And if need be, take your business else where. Just make sure its worth the gas.

And when I have the time, probably Monday, I'll be sure to write my local representatives. Slackers!

Morning Rise

Fresh biscuits straight out the oven. Hot singe against skilled skin, transfer onto cooling racks. Warmth radiating on her glowing face. She can almost feel the heaviness in her stomach, they've averted hunger yet again. All things considered, life is good. The rush, of getting the biscuits done in time for Papi to make it out the door and swiftly down to work by carpool, has Mami's high blood pressure reaching for a tall glass of ice chilled filtered water and the tiny round pill, take twice daily. Not yet though, she has to eat with it; and who can eat with that heavy feeling? No, not yet. Too many tasks are waiting to get done without the race of little feet and hands flying and grabbing. It's far too quiet. Sleeping babes will soon erupt with sounds liking a herd of elephants coming down the stairs, if elephants lived in townhouses that could support their weight.
I'm just waiting for the day those big foot's in the making come crashing through the ceiling.
Thoughts of buying a single story house with solid foundation and the strongest floor a mother can have installed rush by Mami's mind's eye.
One day...
So many hopes and dreams. What were those of my grandmother and her mother before? My house is far quieter and less crowded than theirs. We are household size 4. Imagine 11 people! More! I miss my cousins and aunts and uncles. Why do I feel so empty sometimes? That is not what I want for my children. That is my push and drive, to stay connected and build us stronger. The family is my core, God is our Father. What blessings we have over us! Thank you Lord for making me whole!
It's always amazing to me the times God answers so quickly. He's always watching over. Although, I know he's had to walk away sometimes. I can't even watch that! *Laughter fills my soul*

Sexy Budgeting

Sexy Budgeting?!
How else could I get your attention? LOL
I've often heard that the number one reason couples argue and split is over finances. Believe me, hubby and I have had our share of money battles. During the course of five years we've been together, we've finally come to a happy routine.
Happiness doesn't last forever. It takes up keep. Sometimes a regular maintenance may be in order .

When I thought of the title for this piece, I envisioned finance sex as a way to reward ourselves for a budget well kept. Hey, it's free, and there's always room for free in our budget! Perhaps you can entice your partner to be mindful of their spending by making it sexy. I must warn you though, organization is hot and saving is climatic! Have you changed your thinking about budgeting yet? Turned on right? Now, lets get down and dirty!

My Sexy Budgeting Plan- Toys:

Calendar (I use a small one that can slide in the outside pocket of my binder)

Binder w/ Pockets and Dividers

Bills (Alphabetized to hole punch and put into divided sections)

Calculator ( I use the one on my computer for balancing and keep a small one handy in my purse to finger when shopping)

Hole Punch (nothing fancy, I use a single but wish I had invested in the three hole...what can I say: I'm cheap!)

Pens/Pencils

Check and Credit cards

Check books and rosters

Work Area (computer & desk, filing cabinet, bookshelves)

A helpful tool is anything that will keep the kids busy and quiet. Math activities are a great idea, the whole family can work with numbers!

Without getting overly complex, I have developed a simple system. This has evolved from designating funds for a specific bill or "want".

Before setting a budget, it's important to have pay stubs available. Pull the last four weeks of pay and give yourself a running total of how much money is available to budget, spend and save.

For the last 4 years I have been a stay at home mom and we have only one income for our family. An income that my hardworking man breaks his back to provide! When paying for things, we are lining someone else's pockets, of course. I have yet to discover a way to adequately line my own... as I know many of you out there are in the same boat with us. In this market of survival of the fittest, I'm taking back my man's hard earned money! This means eliminating the luxuries. To see where all that money is going, it's important to save an entire month of receipts. Use your notebook to categorize a running total of the non-bill expenses. Convenience, hygiene, food, etc. Do you have more receipts spent on take or dining out than groceries? Decide what are necessities. Re-evaluate where you can get creative and cut back. You'll be surprised how much you can put towards another bill or be able to save for a wish list item.

The WISH LIST is a page where all the non essential items you really want go. Remember, these items you do not absolutely need to survive. This is where all those shopping spree's go to wait for the money to be budgeted and saved for. My wish list currently includes new work boots for my hubby, school supplies and clothes for the kids and crocheting and knitting material for myself.

Now for those bills and your calendar.

My Budgeting Plan- Maintenance:

Plot each bill on its due date.

Count how many paychecks between now and due.

Divide the amount of the bill by how many paychecks you have till due.

This is how much you will have to designate from each check for bill payment.

Insert each amount on the pay date.

Once I have a total for the week, I do some banking. I have separate accounts for bills and spending. The bill money is NOT TO TOUCH. It is not an overdraft account either. This money is already not our own. The goal and purpose of budgeting this way is to ensure the bills are paid in their entirety and on time. The spending money is an allowance for gas, groceries and essentials. Designate a savings account for a set amount to go into it each week, set it and forget it! Even if it's as little as $10 per week, it will start to add up.

Maybe one of these days, when I can afford to replace this computer, I can learn to use some budgeting software. Until then, this method helps keep my sanity. There is maintenance required in budgeting. I sit down with the budget every pay day and keep a well maintained roster as we spend. Tracking my accounts on my own has exposed bank errors. Just recently, I received a new bank card and both my accounts were debited for one transaction. If I hadn't caught this mistake I'd be out a chunk of much needed cash and the vendor wouldn't have cared to return the money, which is my assumption. I know how much money I have before the bank shows it cleared. The bank lines their pockets on those people that don't balance themselves thereby causing overdraft, resulting in the bank making out on so many fees. As you budget for yourself and your family in this Oh So Sexy way, don't be afraid to call the bill collectors and bank to discuss waiving fees or special promotions. This day and age everyone is willing to work with you. It may take a few return calls and speaking to different people, but it's well worth the effort. If you don't feel comfortable being transferred to another person, simply end the call and call back. Chances are you will be connected to a different person, hopefully someone that knows how to give you what you need...and what is more satisfying than that? Not much!

A letter to my fateful friend

At the top of the hand written note is a breath to set the tone, "I hope you're inspired. I hope you laugh. 'I hope you dance'. Free yourself from your chains."

The note has been sitting here for four days now. Why can't she just give it to the woman already?

The feminine handwriting loops of printing and flows of script, yet not quite one or the other. The paper is a small white 5x7 sheet, fresh enough but starting to show signs of handling.

"You don't have email, and it's too late to call. So I sit here writing to you at 1:53 am.

I am also checking email, comparing prices at Chuck E. Cheese's (they don't list any, by the way), setting up a Google calendar and getting info on the marina so I can post the info on my group web page.
And thinking about you.
Yeah, I'm tough. My dad is a marine and my mom raised us with strong convictions and plenty of guilt. But love, unconditional love.
That's what I believe in. That love of Christ, of God for us his children. I hope you can set your sights on making each day better than the one before. Enjoy each moment you're given; by taking a moment to just hug and kiss your babies and look out for all the beauty around you.
The moments when Alex cuddles up next to me and tells me his thoughts, to when Juan Jr. picks so many flowers and we smell them together. That's the good stuff.

A few more days pass and the letter is crumpled and trashed. Thing is, if spoken words made no difference, how would written words do any different? Pearls before swine... It's so sad the condition of this fateful friend. Misery truly loves company, but this one will be left alone. To wallow in her own fate. No longer can the letter be given because a decision has been made, to cut her out for good. May God keep this ex friend in his care and protect her children from the illness of her soul.

How to heal a broken relationship.

Could this relationship be repaired? Broken hearted, depressed, empty and listless. Where there was once such passion, how did they get here? Beyond the shame, fear, anger and doubt...might there be a glimmer of hope? Too many questions, not enough answers.

Above all, compromise, a sort of give and take between man and woman. A dance of roles and sometimes even reversals. Will this be the key to making it last? She doesn't want to just last. That feels about as good as coming in last place. No, not for him either. So to spice it up, they choose passion to spark the night air with electrical skin.

Mom and Dad need this right now. To find themselves again. He needs to speak with thought and clarity. She needs to be at quiet peace, close in his space. A tantric kind of pulse. To even imagine what good this has done for the entire family! The children will feel the love that flows in this home.

Before this can be achieved, there has to be a united front.

"Its you and me against the world!"

She ponders the power that will come from this mantra. It makes perfect sense. There is so much that can positively effect the lives of her family. The point is to discern and weed out the negative. Just like any good strategy, there has to be thought as to how best handle each one of life's situations. This choice will not only effect her, but the delicate lives of her children. Also, the life of the man she vowed in her heart to honor.

There is a breaking point. A point of no return. We each have it, the line if crossed that will break the deal. Void and null. And even in the midst of this chaos, we can find clarity and purpose. Making a choice of happiness and amicable respect. There may even be a chance through these efforts to make it back to the place where there is passion and love. Stubborn will not see to it, nor vengeance and a sharp tongue.

She found herself hitting another bump in the road.
Another stop along the way.
Distractions pour out slow like maple syrup whipped with confectioner's sugar.
Sweet kisses cover her golden body tanned by the pool time sun.

Water falling, raindrops cool the mid morning heat.
Step out into the cascading wash of cool kisses on hot flesh, pulsating steamy heat.
Quickly quieting, rainstorm fading; clinging clothes revealing supple skin.

Getting Ready

Tomorrow is the big day! For the first time, Nicole will be speaking to a second grade class on the topic of anti-violence. This has been brought on by a series of events beginning with her seven year old son being picked on by a bully. As a stay at home mom, Nicole has been able to micro manage the family's life. Mother of two sons and girlfriend to a hard working provider, never has her role been more clear than it is now. Thinking back to the brand new infant days of worried breast feeding and rushed sleeplessness, where have her babies gone? Two young men take their place.

This late night has become early morning; the dawn will break far too soon.

Update 8/5/09
Nicole was never able to address the class regarding such a topic as which impacts so many lives. Each one of us has a memory of being bullied, perhaps even being a bully ourselves. In this technology age, bullying has taken many diversified forms. The most concerning is when violence is threatened and carried out. The unfortunate thing is that the school does not permit unlicensed speakers. As a parent, Nicole can appreciate this requirement. It at least keeps just anyone from addressing the students, these young minds so impressionable and eager. Nicole now has a goal in mind, to become a certified speaker.
